Work

The product of the force along the direction of motion and the distance moved. Measured in energy units, joules.

where
W = work done [J]
F = applied force [N]
s = distance moved in the direction of the force [m]
Note:
If the force is acting at an angle to the direction of travel then the component of force acting along the direction of travel is used. If the applied force is at right angles to the direction of motion of the object, no work is done.
The work done by a torque:

W = work done [J]
T = applied torque [Nm]
θ = angle turned through [rad]
