Specific Gravity

The density (mass per unit volume) of any material divided by that of water at a standard temperature, specific gravity of water = 1:00.

If the liquid you are investigating floats on water the specific gravity is less than one. If it sinks, it is higher than one.

The specific gravity of the electrolyte in a battery can be used to measure the state of charge of the battery.

Note: Density is a better definition.
