Ramjet

A jet engine with no mechanical compressor, consisting of specially shaped tubes or ducts open at both ends. The air necessary for combustion is shoved into the duct and compressed by the forward motion of the engine. The air is efficiently slowed to subsonic speeds before being used for combustion.

It needs to be accelerated to high speed before it can become operative.
