Phase Velocity
- The velocity with which planes of equal phase, crests or troughs, progress through the medium.
- where
- vp = phase velocity [ms-1]
- ω = angular frequency [rads-1]
- k = wavenumber [m-1]
- f = frequency [Hz]
- λ = wavelength [m]
- ω = angular frequency [rads-1]
In both dispersive and non-dispersive media the wave velocity for sinusoidal waves of a particular frequency is termed the phase velocity.
