Noble Gases

The gaseous chemical elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon, which are all placed in Group 0 of the Periodic Table.

They are so named because of their marked reluctance to 'lower' themselves by combining with other chemical elements to form compounds. They took a long time to discover as they hardly ever combine with other elements in reactions.

Characteristics:

  • unreactive
  • exist as single atoms
  • used as inert gases in electric discharge and filament lamps
