Newcomen, Thomas (1663-1729)
Created the first practical steam engine for pumping water, the Newcomen steam engine.
The Newcomen engine (atmospheric engine) admitted steam into a cylinder which was then condensed by cold water and the piston driven by atmospheric pressure.
