Lubricant
Any material interposed between two surfaces that reduces the friction or wear, or both, between them.
Can be liquid, solid (grease) or gaseous (air).
Important characteristics:
- prevent metal-to-metal contact between moving surfaces
- a cooling medium
- aid chip removal
- protect surfaces from rust and corrosion
