The splitting of a heavy nucleus into two or more lighter nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy.

The smaller nuclei have higher binding energy than the original nucleus, and fission results in the release of energy.

Einstein′s equation, E=mc2 may be used to express the energy produced from the change in mass of fission reactions.
