Fermi, Enrico (1901-1954)
American physicist born in Rome; researched the transmutation of elements through neutron bombardment; his team produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction at the University of Chicago. He received the Nobel Prize for physics for the development of neutron-induced nuclear reactions in 1938.
