Chemistry

  1. An element or chemical compound that helps make up a material system; the composition of a phase or system can be described by giving the relative amounts of each component.

  2. A substance present in a mixture in which no reactions occur.

Physics

Projection of a vector quantity, as force or velocity, along an axis.
