Battery Cell Balancing

Where a battery pack consists of more than one cell it is important that the cells are balanced.

This is especially true where Lithium Ion cells are concerned as they are sensitive to under and over voltage conditions as well as over temperature.

There are three types of cell balancing:

  1. Charging - cells are charge to a predetermined voltage and so brought back into balance
  2. Passive - a resistive load is shunted across the cell to discharge it and so bring the SoC down to the lowest denominator.
  3. Active - operates by moving energy from cells with a high SoC to cells with a lower SoC.
