Auxiliary Power Unit
A device that converts high density fuel into electrical power.
On board an electric vehicle this can be known as a range extender.
- Calibration independent of vehicle load
- No calibration for transient response
- Limited operating points - can optimise design for a few engine speed/loads
An APU is carried on board an aircraft to provide an independent power source for such services as:
- ventilation and air conditioning
this can be for both on the ground and in the air if needed.
