Alcohol

An alcohol is an organic compound with a carbon bound to a hydroxyl group.

The two simplest alcohols are methanol and ethanol.


Examples
methanolCH3OH
ethanolCH3CH2OH
propanolCH3CH2CH2OH

Compounds with -OH attached to an aromatic ring are called phenols rather than alcohols.

Historical Notes
880 AD Arabian chemists make alcohol by distilling wine.
